Acocks Green Area Guide

Acocks Green (occasionally written as Acock’s Green) is located in the Yardley District of Birmingham, in the south-eastern part of the city. It covers an area slightly under 5 square kilometres or 2 square miles and in the 2011 census had a population of 28,371.

The History of Acocks Green

The area gets its slightly unusual name from the Acock family who built a large house in the area in 1370, though the earliest reference to the name is as late as 1604 when it appeared in the Yardley Parish Register. The area’s fortunes changed in the late 18th century when the Warwick and Birmingham Canal was constructed. Its path took it through Acocks Green and the subsequent wharves that sprung up along its path brought prosperity to the area resulting in its expansion throughout the following century until it was absorbed into Birmingham officially in 1911.
