Digbeth Area Guide

Digbeth is located in the centre of Birmingham, and with the removal of the Inner Ring Road is now officially one of the nine city centre districts. It is one of the areas that has benefitted most from the rejuvenation projects and was recently hailed by the Sunday Times as the “coolest neighbourhood in Britain.”

The History of Digbeth

The first settlement in what is today Digbeth was in the 7th century. Later, during the Industrial Revolution, Digbeth was one of the first centres of industry in Birmingham and it became extremely heavily industrialised, gaining a reputation and a level of importance throughout the country. As a result, the area flourished with several notable buildings springing up, many of which still characterise the area today.

As the industry receded (though it is important to state there is still a significant amount of industry remaining in the area), Digbeth became less prosperous, but the Big City Plan has already transformed the area and will continue to do so. The distinctive warehouses and factories are gradually becoming trendy apartments, or retail premises, art and culture hubs and offices.

Transport Links

Though Digbeth itself doesn’t have its own train station it is very close to both Birmingham New Street and Bordesley Rail Stations, and there are numerous bus routes that serve the area. Digbeth Coach Station recently renamed Birmingham Coach Station is in the north of the area.

In 2026 the HS2 rail link will run from Curzon Street Digbeth, with fast rail links to London, Manchester and Leeds.

Education

There are no schools in Digbeth, however there are several, both primary and secondary schools, located a short distance to the east, south and west. South and City College Birmingham has three campuses in Digbeth.

Amenities

The area has no shortage of amenities, all within easy walking distance. As well as the basics such as chemists and grocery stores (there are several Tesco Metros) the area is home to the famous Bull Ring with its huge range of retail and F&B outlets. The area has also got a growing reputation for its independent shopping stores.
