Yardley Wood Area Guide

Yardley Wood is an area located in the south of Birmingham, a little under six miles from the city centre. It sits across the wards of Highter's Heath and Billesley. Yardley Wood should not be confused with Yardley which is a suburb in the east of Birmingham.

The History of Yardley Wood

Yardley manor, where Yardley Wood is located today, existed throughout the Middle Ages, but the name Yardley Wood was not used until as late as 1907 with the building of the railway. When they put a station in the area it was given the name Yardley Wood Railway Station, and the town subsequently grew and developed around that. That said, development was slow, and it was still largely rural until the 1920’s when the Billesley council estate sprung up. Development continued throughout the 20th century.
